small business saturday: Filament

This week for small business Saturday, we’re headed to Mebane (meh-Ben), North Carolina. The little downtown is adorable and filled with a variety of shops – antiques, gifts, clothing, etc. One of my favorites is Filament Coffee and Tea! Although their first billing is as a coffee house, there is much more to love about this artisan shop.

Filament sells an assortment of small, unique items in the front of the space – anything from soaps to candles, cards to NC memorabilia – all handmade by American artists. In addition, they more recently began selling house and air plants and have a wonderful variety! (I may or may not have picked one up on my last trip.)

A few of my favorite finds:

  • their candles! I love more herbal, earthy scents and boy does Filament deliver on that. I have a few tomato leaf and herb garden candles that I restock whenever they get low and I just recently purchased one called “Summer Storm” … is there a better scent?
  • Wooden NC and Mebane Christmas ornaments. Filament goes all out with the decor at Christmas time and always hooks me with whatever is hanging from their perfectly flocked trees!
  • Plants and plant pots! I picked up my favorite little face plant pot a couple of years ago when I was having a rough day (trying to get pregnant can be such a drag, right?!) and it makes me smile whenever I look at it.

Okay, so now that I (hopefully) sufficiently explained why Filament is about more than just coffee and tea, I would be remiss if I didn’t also rave about that just a bit! They serve local Counter Culture Coffee in some of the most unique and delicious combinations I’ve seen. And, if you’re not into coffee, their tea game is ON POINT! They carry more than 20 fair trade, organic loose leaf teas to choose from.

A few favorite drink options:

  • the Filament … a bit of a spiced latte. Great hot or iced and served year-round.
  • The shaken lemon basil iced latte … sounds crazy, right? I was skeptical, but it is amazing. (Usually available in spring)
  • The blueberry hill latte. I prefer this iced. It is the perfect amount of subtle sweetness – YUM! (Usually available in the mid-summer)
